The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) encourages “business as usual” on the eve of the vote for a new Prime Minister by Members of National Parliament in Honiara tomorrow Wednesday 15 November 2017.

“With the high visibility operation underway by Police in and around Honiara we want to encourage people to continue with business as usual tomorrow and the rest of this week,” says Supervising Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Gwen Ratu, who is also overall Commander of the Police Operations for the Election of a New Prime Minister.

Police at the Tingoa Police Station, on Rennell Island in the Rennell-Bellona Province are investigating the discovery of 19 Second World War live ammunitions on the Island.

“Police here at Tingoa Police Station confiscated the ammunitions on 2 November after they were discovered in the possession of a group of people who were driving around with them on the Island,” says Acting Provincial Police Commander, Renbel Province, Macfred Tesuatai.

As part of its operations to prevent crime within communities in around Honiara during the current political situation, the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) through its National Community Policing Unit continues to meet with community leaders to encourage them to work together with their members to maintain law and order during this current period.

Members of the public in Honiara including drivers and pedestrians have been advised to watch out for possible diversion of traffic on some of the roads in the center of the city as Police mount a major operation for the election of a new Prime Minister on Wednesday this week.

The Police Kukum Traffic Centre in Honiara and the Police Professional and Internal Investigations Unit (PSII) are investigating an accident involving a police vehicle in the King George VI school area on the evening of Friday 10 November 2017.

No one was injured during the accident.

Supervising Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), National Capital and Crime Prevention, Superintendent, Patricia Leta says, “The matter has been brought to my attention and I can confirm that the vehicle involved in the incident was allocated to police in Guadalcanal Province.”

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) through its National Community Policing Department has conducted crime prevention outreach meetings in communities in and around Honiara as part of its operation to maintain law and order under the current political situation.

This includes communities in the Sun Valley and Lungga areas, Burns Creek, Papaho, Choviri, Mbokonavera and Kaibia.

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has commended the public for their patience while the country’s national politicians continue to resolve the current political situation following the motion of no-confidence early this week.

“There has been no major incident to disturb the normal law and order and peace in this country and we are thankful to the public for their patience. But we must not take the situation lightly,” says Commissioner of Police, Matthew Varley.

Police in the Rennell-Bellona Province are investigating an alleged arson incident in the Kavau area on Rennell Island during which two permanent buildings and a security house belonging to a logging company were burned down on 5 November 2017.

It was alleged the incident occurred as a result of a land dispute between the logging company, Samlingsun Limited and land owners.

No arrests have been made so far.

Chiefs, church and women leaders from communities in Honiara are to assist the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) maintain law and order during the current political situation being experienced in the country.

This follows a meeting coordinated by the RSIPF National Community Policing Unit with about 20 chiefs, church and women leaders representing settlements in and around Honiara today.

“Being a Police officer let alone a female is quite challenging but everything has challenges,” says Police Constable Roberta Ora, one of only two female officers who serve in the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Fire and Rescue Service, as firefighters.

34-year-old Police constable Roberta Ora who comes from Western, Malaita and Temotu Provinces was recruited as a Police officer in July 2007 and in the past 10 years she was posted to various units within the RSIPF including General duties, National Traffic Unit, Administration duties and National Intelligence unit.
