RSIPF Officers in the Western Province have arrested a suspect male for the illegal possession of a firearm during an early morning operation today Monday 7 August at Tinge Village, in Marovo.

Police believe that the suspect was in possession of the skeleton barrel of a World War II 303 rifle with no cocking handle, no butt but with a magazine without any ammunition.

The RSIPF greatly welcomes the support from members of the public following the successful raid at the Lio Ridge area in East Honiara during the weekend which resulted in the arrest of four suspects and the confiscation of 2,000 litres of the illegal substance kwaso with an estimated street value of $100,000.00.

Police also confiscated distilling apparatus during the raid as well as other material evidence.

RSIPF Officers in Taro, Choiseul Province have arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged burning of a logging truck with damages estimated at $500,000.00 at the Tuzu Logging Camp in South Choiseul on Thursday 3 August 2017.

The suspect, a representative of one of the local clans, was brought to Taro Police Station and was formally arrested and placed in custody while investigations continue into the incident.

A joint operation between RSIPF Honiara City and Guadalcanal Province confiscated about 2,000 litres of kwaso worth about $100, 000.00 plus at Lio Ridge, East Honiara.

During the raid, the joint operation apprehended four adults for the brewing of illegal substances. Among them were two females.

The four alleged suspects were formally arrested and placed in police custody awaiting further investigations.

Besides the 2000 litres of kwaso, Police also confiscate distilling apparatus which have been detained in police custody.

The RSIPF has appealed to the public in Honiara for their cooperation as it launches “Operation G75 anniversary” to provide security during the 75th Battle of Guadalcanal Anniversary which will be held in Honiara from 5 – 9 August 2017

Several hundred dignitaries and family members and relatives of soldiers from United States of America, Australia and New Zealand who fought during the Battle of Guadalcanal during the Second World War will be in Honiara for the anniversary.

RSIPF Officers in Auki, Malaita Province are investigating an incident at a village in Central Kwara’ae which resulted in the burning of two residential houses and a kitchen and all the personal properties inside the houses and the looting of other property.

The RSIPF is continuing with its investigations into a missing crew member from a tug boat that sunk off Bugana Island in the Central Islands Province in the early evening of Thursday 27 July 2017.

There were seven crew members on board the tug boat when it sank. Six of the crew swam to safety on Bugana Island but one, an Asian crew member, is still missing.

The tug boat was pulling a barge when the incident happened. It was travelling from Honiara to Malaita when it sank after the rope tied to the tug boat broke resulting in the tug boat taking in water and sinking.

The National Community Policing Unit of the RSIPF is at the Guadalcanal Weaving Festival which opened today at the Lela Beach West of Honiara conducting an outreach program.

Members of the community policing team will give talks on the Family Protection Act, the Crime Prevention Strategy and distribute information on the dangers of kwaso, marijuana, alcohol abuse and family violence in Solomon Islands.

The National Community Policing team of the RSIPF conducted a half day workshop for the Solomon Island Deaf Association (SIDA) yesterday 30 July at Central Police Station in Honiara.

The half-day workshop was aimed at sharing information with people with disabilities on the Family Protection Act.

Acting Director National Community Policing, Staff Sergeant David Waura said: “The program is part of community awareness and engagement plan to visit and conduct outreach sessions for people with disabilities during the roll out of the RSIPF’s Crime Prevention Strategy.”
