RSIPF appeals for peaceful outcome of results
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Police Operation Centre (POC) for the National General Election (NGE) has received some reports involving intimidation for some parts of the country whilst the polling day was peaceful throughout the country on 3 April 2019.
The incidents are reported to have happened after some members of the public cast their votes. Police are currently investigating some of the allegations of intimidation.
“Police will not take these issues lightly and any reports received regarding this kind of report will be dealt with according to law,” says POC Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Joseph Manelugu.
“As we are now in the counting period and results will be announced soon, I would like to appeal to our good people across the country to respect each other. Respect people’s choice to exercise their democratic rights. Going around intimidating people is against the law,” says ACP Manelugu
He adds: “The RSIPF would like to appeal to everybody for this good behaviour to continue. We want to appeal to supporters of all candidates to respect the outcome of the vote.”
“Do not to take the law into your own hands if you are unhappy with the result. I appeal to everyone to refrain from any form of violence, provocation or confrontation including through Facebook and other social media platforms. It will only tarnish the peace and success we had on polling day.”
POC Commander Manelugu emphasizes: “For the safety of everybody, the Police will not permit any victory float parades by supporters of any winning candidate in Honiara or the provinces. This also includes float parades on our waters. As your police, the RSIPF is concerned about your safety and the last thing we want to see is any tragic accidents on our roads or on our waters.”
“Please respect this decision as police will take strong action against anyone who tries to organise any float parade.”
“Police officers will be out on the roads to conduct random breath testing (RBT) and traffic checks to ensure our roads are safe. Officers will also be checking on vehicle and drivers’ licenses. We will take action against any overloading of vehicles. And always remember - do not drink and drive.”
