RSIPF reassures general public of Honiara that situation now back to normal

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) reassures the general public in Honiara and business houses that situation is returning to normal.

Commissioner Matthew Varley says “Overnight there were no major disturbances in Honiara. Our police continued to conduct high visibility patrols across the city as a precautionary measure. But the situation was calmer than previous nights. I encourage people residing in Honiara and business houses to feel confident to continue with business as usual.”

Mr Varley says, “Although the past few days have been tough, we are asking all the communities of Honiara to come together in peace. We will continue to be out on the streets day and night for reassurance should anything further happen, but I want families and businesses to feel safer. Should there be any further situations developing, police remain ready to deal with it.”

“I would like to thank the overwhelming majority of citizens in and around Honiara for observing the rule of law by staying away from the disturbances caused by a very small number of people,” says Commissioner Varley.

The police chief says, “I ask all chiefs, community leaders, church leaders, women and men and youth leaders across Honiara and all provinces of Solomon Islands to continue to talk with your people to observe law and order and rebuild peace and unity in our community.”
