Police in Honiara have arrested a 46-year-old man for drunk driving in the Chinatown area of Honiara on 2 May 2019.

Police officers on duty last night sighted a short boot vehicle travelling on the road at China Town and suspected that the driver was under the influence of liquor. Officers stopped the vehicle and tested his blood alcohol level which was over the legal limit. A bottle of kwaso was also found in the vehicle.

Officers escorted the driver and his vehicle to Honiara Central Police Station where the driver was arrested for presence of alcohol in person’s blood contrary to section 43 (a) of the Road Transport Act and placed in cell where he spent the night.

The driver was taken to the Kukum Traffic Centre today (3 May 2019) where he was charged accordingly and bailed to appear in court at a later date.

Assistant Commissioner National Capital and Crime prevention, (ACP) Simpson Pogeava says, “I would like to thank Police officers who continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of our City. Thank you for a job well done.”

“And I would like to remind drivers and vehicle owners not to drink and drive. When you drive under the influence of alcohol you are endangering your own safety and the safety of other road users. Police will continue to conduct high visibility patrols and traffic checks throughout Honiara City.”

ACP Pogeava adds:

“I encourage members of the public to report to police drivers who are under the influence of alcohol whilst driving on the road. This must be done to ensure safety on our roads.”

Officers on duty during the night reported that the City was quiet and peaceful with only few disturbances that were attended to.
