More than one hundred people in East Mbaelelea in North Malaita, Malaita Province teamed up with the officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in a campaign against brewing of kwaso on 6 May 2019.

During the campaign program people joined in a march calling for surrendering of Kwaso equipment’s and stop from such brewing illegal substance.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Malaita Province, Superintendent Solomon Sisimia says, “The team was led by Officer In-Charge (OIC) Malu’u Police Station, Inspector Peter Kinita and supported by communities including Baelanga, Fourere, Luma’alu, Torae and Kwailabesi.”

“The above five communities consisted of thirteen tribal groups in East Mbaelelea. Church leaders, chiefs, women, children and school students joined the march which ended at Luma’alu Village,” Superintendent Sisimia adds.

Superintendent Sisimia explains: “The consumption of kwaso continues to cause disturbances in our communities during church programs and other community gatherings. It also continues to affect the lives of women and children.”

“In response to the campaign march, five large cylinders, hoses and other equipment used for the distilling of kwaso were surrendered to police by those brewing the illegal substance.”

“The people from these communities appreciated the presence of the police and assured police that they will continue to work together with the officers in the Northern part of Malaita Province in the campaign against kwaso,” says PPC Sisimia.
No arrests were made during the campaign but Police issued warnings and encouraged members of the community to maintain law and order in their communities.
