RSIPF to conduct bomb blasting in Central Province

The location of the bombs in the Russell Islands

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) will conduct bomb blasting at one of the Russell Islands in the Central Province on Saturday 25 May 2019.

Officer In-charge (OIC) of the RSIPF Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, Inspector Clifford Tunuki says, “Six operators from the EOD will travel tomorrow (24 May 2019) to the Russell Islands to destroy five World War II bombs which have been discovered by locals at a reef off Elephant Island.”

He explains: “The blasting of the bombs is part of the RSIPF’s responsibilities to remove bombs found which are dangerous to our environment and our lives. The exercise to blast the bombs will happen this Saturday (25 May 2019) between 8 am and 2 pm.”

He adds: “A Reef near Elephant Island is also known as Bomb Reef, and is situated about six kilometres from north of Pavuvu Island in the Russell Islands.”

“I call on the communities living within the surrounding islands to keep out from the area on Saturday 25 May 2019 between the stated timings whilst the operation is in progress,” says OIC Tunuki.

Police call on communities in the Russell Islands and across the country to report any sightings of any unexploded bombs through Police free toll line 999, the RSIPF EOD mobile 7495215 or to any nearest police station.
