RSIPF investigates alleged infanticide incident in Makira-Ulawa Province
Officers of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) in Kirakira are investigating an alleged infanticide incident that occurred at a School in East Makira in the Makira-Ulawa Province on 20 August 2019.
Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Makira Ulawa Province, Inspector Jerry Muaki says, “A report received from a School in West Wainoni, East Makira alleged that a 17-year-old female student killed her baby shortly after giving birth to the baby boy before disposing the body at sea.”
Inspector Muaki explains, “An investigation team from Kirakira Police Station have been sent to the area and returned already. Investigations into the incident continue with no arrests made so far. The suspect is still admitted at the Kirakira Hospital.”
“I would like to thank the authorities at the concerned School in East Makira for their prompt action in reporting the incident to Police and taking the suspect quickly for medical attention. Infanticide is a very serious offence under Solomon Islands Penal Code.”
“I appeal to the good people of Makira Ulawa Province to report such incidences to the police as such an act is very serious as well as a great risk to the lives of the young girls and women,” Inspector Muaki emphasises.
