Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in Gizo, Western Province have conducted a traffic and sea safety awareness talk at Gizo Market on 4 September 2019.

The awareness talk was held for the public to be aware of their safety and how Police and public can work together in carrying out Law and order by reporting those breaching our laws.

Speaking during the awareness program, Officer Commanding Station, (OCS) Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Alick Alesena says, “I would like to remind road users to take precautions when walking along the road, especially children and women.”

He adds, “I would also like to warn vehicle drivers and out boat motor (OBM) skippers not to drink and drive as your passengers' lives are in your hands. As drivers, we are to ensure the safety of our passengers.”

“All vehicle drivers must have a license before using the road and vehicle owners must ensure that your vehicles are road worthy. This is in accordance with the law,” SSgt Alesena emphasises.

“Police in Gizo will now test all drivers whether vehicle or OBM for the presence of alcohol in a person’s blood. If anyone is caught under influence of liquor they will be prosecuted.”

“I would also like to urge the travelling public in the Western Province to always think about our safety when travelling at sea. Check the weather before travelling. Ensure safety equipment is on board. Let others know of your destination and expected time of arrival.”

SSgt Alesena adds: “I urge members of the public to report any case of drunk driving whether on a vehicle or OBM. Let us work together to ensure that our roads are safe, our passengers are safe and that our laws are upheld."

Police officers will continue to conduct awareness at schools and in rural communities throughout Western Province.
