RSIPF officers to benefit from leadership management training course

Leadership management within the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) will benefit from a Certificate IV course in leadership and management which officially opened today (10 February 2020) at the Rove Police Headquarters in Honiara.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) Corporate Support Ian Bara says, “The Solomon Islands Police Development Program (SIPDP) is sponsoring the training for Sergeants, Staff Sergeants and Inspectors.”

“The course, delivered by the Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) will see 40 RSIPF Team Leaders undergo five weeks of classroom theory that will improve their leadership and management skills. Participants will return to their respective work areas during the training period and will be required to apply the skills they have learnt in class at their work place. This will demonstrate a practical ability to apply the skills learnt,” AC Bara explains.

He adds: “The qualified instructors will assess the course participants and if all the standards have been met they will be awarded with an industry recognised Certificate IV in Leadership and Management. This training is to grow and strengthen leadership throughout the RSIPF with other senior leaders to embark on the Australian Institute of Police Management (AIPM) courses throughout the year. There were many RSIPF applicants for the Certificate IV course, which shows the strong desire and motivation of members to improve their leadership and management skills.”

“This Certificate IV course is a recognised qualification around the world. It will require strong commitment and dedication from every participant over the entire duration to complete the course but the end gain is well worth the hard work. As a participant, you are expected to look after and assist each other as much as you can, as ultimately they are all RSIPF brothers and sisters,” AC Bara told the participants.

He emphasised to the participants: “Honesty and integrity are paramount to strong leadership and management. As future leaders of the RSIPF, everyone here must hold those values up and not fall to temptation or corruption. Many applied for this course and did not make it on. Congratulations to those here today for making the course. However, understand that if you do not take the course seriously and choose later not to continue then one of your colleagues has missed a course. Please commit 100% from day one and complete the course.”

“There are senior RSIPF officers, SIPDP advisors and classmates to help you if you struggle at any point. Reach out to people you know and trust and seek assistance if you need it. No great leaders or managers ever work alone and there is no shame in asking for help if you need it,” says AC Bara.
