Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at the Tulagi Police Station are investigating the sudden death of a 50-year-old male at Bona Village, Sunfly Bonavester, in the Central Province on 4 April 2020.

An initial report received by police says the deceased and his wife left Kasika Island in a dugout canoe with a 20 kilogram bag of food and were heading home after market. Approaching Havulo Island, they encountered strong winds and the deceased dropped off his wife to walk to the other side of Takadora Point while he will try to paddle around the Point.

While on her way the wife saw her husband capsized at the side of the Takadora Point with the canoe over turning. She then asked her husband if she could assist but her husband told her instead to go back to their village to inform his sons and grandsons to come and help him.

Provincial Police Commander Central Province Inspector Hugo Maelasi says, “Family members and relatives of the deceased conducted a search in the surrounding area where the deceased sunk and later found his body some meters away from where he sunk.”

“I call on people in and around Bona Village who may have any information about this incident to come forward to police and assist in the investigation into this sad incident. I also appeal to family and relatives of the deceased to stay calm while investigations continue into the matter,” says PPC Maelasi.

The body of the deceased was buried at his home village after it was recovered.
