Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in Gizo, Western Province are now ready to take control of the traffic situation in the provincial town following a recent one week training conducted at the Gizo Police Station.Western Provincial Police Commander, Fred Satu said, “my officers have not had training in traffic duties/control for a while so I requested assistance from the RSIPF National Traffic unit in Honiara as well as the Participating Police Force of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI PPF).” “I wish to thank the RSIPF Executive for approving this training, the Director Traffic Centre and the RAMSI PPF for responding to my request by sending officers to do both the theory and practical training. The town of Gizo is developing fast and the number of vehicles is increasing, so it is the duty of the police to ensure that these vehicles are properly licensed and the drivers have valid driver’s licences,” said PPC Satu. PPC Satu explained: “As part of the training, the police in Gizo conducted a traffic check in the township for two days resulting in 16 traffic cases registered for several offences including driving a vehicle without a valid licence and driving without a valid driver’s licence.” “With the training, my officers will be conducting traffic checks at regular intervals to ensure that our roads are safe for both our pedestrians and vehicle users,”“I wish to thank the vehicle owners, the drivers and members of the public in Gizo for their cooperation during the traffic checks. I look forward to the same cooperation during future traffic checks,” Mr Satu said. The same traffic training is scheduled to be conducted in other provincial police stations throughout the country.
