RSIPF traffic investigates a fatal accident at Henderson
The National Traffic Department of the RSIPF is investigating a fatal accident involving one male person from Tetupa Village GPPOL 3, North East Guadalcanal, who was hit by a bus late yesterday afternoon (8 July 2020) in the Henderson area East of Honiara.
Director of the National Traffic Department Superintendent Fred Satu says, “An initial report on this tragic incident say that the deceased with his wife and their teenage boy were on board the pick-up truck travelling from Honiara main market heading back home. The deceased is believed to have taken some alcohol before he and his family boarded the vehicle. On their way passing the Lungga Bridge East of Honiara, the deceased asked his wife to give him some money. His wife gave him $100.00.”
“They stopped at the shops in the Lungga area and the deceased went into one of the shops and bought some goods before they drove out again heading in the easterly direction.”
Superintendent Satu adds: “Just opposite the Island Night Club in the Henderson area, the deceased asked the driver of the motor vehicle to stop. As the driver was ready to stop the deceased suddenly jumped out of the truck, without looking for incoming vehicles from both lanes. It is believed that he ran straight into the main road, after one vehicle passed him from the westerly direction. There was a 15-seater mini bus travelling at a high speed from the easterly direction. The bus hit the deceased and it is believed he died instantly.”
“The driver of the bus went to the Henderson Police Station and surrendered himself. He is now being held at the Station.”
Superintendent Satu adds, “Police Traffic officers attended the scene of the incident and saw the body of the deceased still at the location where the incident happened. The deceased was pronounced dead on arrival at the National Referral Hospital.
“A random breatherlizer test (RBT) was conducted on the bus driver but the result was negative.”
“I call on witnesses to the incident to come forward to the police and assist with the investigation.”
“Our condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased male person following their loss,” says Superintendent Satu.
