The new Commissioner of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) Mostyn Mangau today joined other colleague members of the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP) to discuss via video conference, the progress to date on the work of the Woman Advisory Network (WAN) within each individual police force throughout the region.

The new RSIPF Commissioner Mangau has taken over from former Commissioner Matthew Varley as Chairman of the PICP WAN Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
“Since becoming Commissioner of RSIPF at the end of July, I have already established a good working relationship with the RSIPF WAN Chair and my newly appointed Gender Coordinator, who has responsibility for the coordination and continued implementation of the RSIPF Gender Strategy 2019-2021.”

Commissioner Mangau adds, “In my commitment to WAN, I have recommenced regular meetings with the RSIPF WAN Chair and Gender Coordinator to ensure I foster a positive working relationship to progress action items against our Gender Strategy. I have also ensured our action items are aligned to the new PICP WAN Strategic Direction 2020-24.”

The PICP WAN has begun working on activities which are aligned with the new PICP WAN Strategic Direction 2020-24 and Action Plan 2020.
Whilst COVID has impacted on the WAN Management Team’s capacity to travel to support activities across the region within agreed timeframes, network members are exploring technology options to maintain connectivity.
At the WAN Chair’s Conference on 21 August 2020, the PICP WAN Chair will transition to Fiji and Fiji will host the WAN Chair’s Conference in 2021.

Commissioner Mangau says, “Following the ELT endorsement of the PICP WAN Strategic Direction 2020-24 and Action Plan 2020, the following Action items have been commenced or completed:
• WAN Communications Working Group, made up of a representative from each the three sub-regions in addition to the WAN Chair and Programme Manager, has been established;
• List of all WAN Chairs has been updated and maintained;
• Draft Communication Strategy documents shared with all WANs;
• Renewed 'Declaration of Commitment' between the Chiefs and the WAN has been drafted, for consideration and signature of the Chiefs;
• WAN Constitution has been reviewed and re-drafted, for consideration and approval of all WAN Chairs in August 2020 (consistent with proposed changes to PICP Constitution and amendments to ELT, which now includes the PICP WAN Chair).
• In addition to these items, the PICP Secretariat ran a Small Grants process with a focus on the WAN and Gender and Family Harm Programme. Applications for small grants were received from four WANs (Solomon Islands, Palau, FSM and Niue), all of which were approved.
• Three WAN Exchanges were completed over this period, with two into the Pacific Transnational Crime Coordination Centre (from PNG and Solomon Islands) and one exchange from PNG to Fiji.”

The new WAN Strategic Direction 2020-24 is to be officially launched alongside the PICP Strategic Plan 2020-24.”

“Today, I ask you all to join me in renewing our ‘Declaration of Commitment’ to the WAN. Please direct and support your WAN Chairs to attend the annual WAN Chair’s Meeting on 21 August 2020,” RSIPF Commissioner Mangau told the other Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police
