RSIPF investigates fatal accident east of Honiara
Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at the National Traffic Department in Honiara are investigating a fatal accident at the Lungga River east of Honiara yesterday( 30 September 2020).
The incident occurred on the west side of Lungga River where companies usually get gravel. Solomon Islands Cement Company owns the excavator that was scooping gravel for the company when the incident happened.
Commissioner Mostyn Mangau says, “The deceased was believed to be drunk and was running in and out of the area where the excavator was operating. The workers asked to him to leave the place but he did not listen, but continued playing around the area of the operation.”
“Unfortunately the deceased was hit by the excavator and died instantly. The deceased was about 18 years old from Malaita province.”
“When police arrived at the scene of the incident the driver of the excavator had escaped for his safety. He is an employee of Solomon Islands Cement Company.”
“Our sincere condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased following the tragic incident,” says Commissioner Mangau
He adds, “Police is now dealing with the matter and I call on families and relatives of the deceased to refrain from taking the law into your own hands but allow police to investigate the matter. I also call on members of the public who may have any information about the incident to come forward to the police.”
