A total of 19 officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) today (20 November 2020), completed their in-classroom training toward the Certificate IV in Leadership Training at the Rove Police Headquarters, marking the end of their Leadership program.

The Australian Government-funded Solomon Islands Police Development Program (SIPDP) supported and managed the training that was endorsed by the RSIPF Executive. The Australia Pacific Training Coalition (APTC) delivered the training. Thirty-seven RSIPF officers at supervisory level undertook the training this year. The Certificate program comprises three blocks of classroom training which began in early 2020 where participants were involved in completing internal and external assessments.

Due to the COVID 19 and the closing of international borders, the program was suspended. However, a solution was realised through video conferencing technology, and the remaining Blocks 2 and 3, have been delivered remotely from Australia. Participants remained in a classroom environment at the Rove Police Academy, with the support of SIPDP Advisors and APTC staff.

All participants have completed 12 units of competency to achieve the Certificate. Some of the units include:

• Showing leadership in the workplace;
• Communicating effectively as a workplace leader;
• Implementing continuous improvement;
• Managing people performance; and
• Leading a diverse workforce

Speaking to the course participants at the Training, Assistant Commissioner Corporate Support Ian Bara said, “I wish to congratulate you on applying for this Certificate IV in Leadership and Management program and successfully being selected. It is an important program that provided you with development opportunities to benefit the RSIPF and the community.”

“Now that this training has been completed, each and every one you now has a responsibility to use those skills, toward strengthening the capability of the RSIPF.”

“It is now an opportunity to be innovative, improve staff performance and accountability, and drive the necessary changes to fulfil the Commissioner’s vision of the RSIPF becoming an efficient, capable and responsive policing service,” said AC Bara.

“You have acquired additional skills to support your staff and deliver a stronger police service to the community and I would encourage you to continue your leadership and learning journey toward becoming even better managers of people with greater responsibility and accountability,” said AC Bara.
