RSIPF investigates traffic incident involving police officer

Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at the National Traffic Department in Honiara are investigating a traffic incident involving a police officer driving a police marked vehicle.

The police officer allegedly hit a female pedestrian in the White River area in West Honiara on 11 December 2020

It is alleged that the police officer driving a police vehicle was travelling in the easterly direction when he allegedly hit a 17-year-old female pedestrian who was trying to cross the road from the eastern lane to the other side of the White River 01 Bus stop.

Director of the National Traffic Department Superintendent Fred Satu says, “The police officer driving the Police vehicle stopped and assisted the victim to the National Referral Hospital (NRH) after the incident. The victim was referred for a medical attention and admitted for minor injuries and body examination.”

“The suspect police officer was invited to the Kukum Traffic Centre to submit his statement regarding the incident and was served with the Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP). Further investigation will be carried out to determine if alcohol was the cause of the accident and whether the officer had a permit to drive a Government owned vehicle.”

Superintendent Satu adds: “The suspected officer will be interviewed and charged for Careless and Inconsiderate driving Contrary to section 40 (1) of the Road and Transport Act Cap 131 and will appear in the Honiara Magistrates’ court on 9 February 2021.”
