RSIPF CONCERN ABOUT CONTINOUS DRINK DRIVING INCIDENTS

The RSIPF continues to be concerned about the increasing incidences of drunk driving recorded on the roads of Honiara despite repeated messages to drivers not to drive when drinking.

Director of the RSIPF Kukum Traffic Centre, Inspector Brian Surimalefo revealed that so far this month alone (1 – 16 July) the Centre has already recorded 11 persons driving with alcohol present in their blood.

“This is the outcome of the Random Breath Testing (RBT) operations which were carried out in Honiara during the recent Solomon Cup 2017 tournament. The police is concerned with this figure because this is happening despite the continuous campaign against drink driving. If you are out to drink, please do not drive but instead either organise someone who has not consumed any alcohol to drive or take public transport,” said Inspector Surimalefo.

Inspector Surimalefo added: “The police will continue with these RBT operations in Honiara while the message of no drink and drive will continue to be repeated until drivers show some responsibility and respect on our roads. Drink driving is a danger to everyone on our roads. Don’t become a statistic.”

Inspector Surimalefo emphasised that these figures are only for Honiara.

The Kukum Traffic Centre through its RBT operations recorded 38 cases with alcohol in blood in May and 28 cases in June. All of these drivers have been charged and are awaiting their dates to appear in Court.

The Centre has also recorded 32 road accidents in May and the same number in June in Honiara. So far in July (1 – 16 July), the Kukum Traffic Centre has recorded 18 road accidents. Some of these accidents are also alcohol-related.
