The roll out of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Crime Prevention Strategy in communities in the Makira Ulawa Province is progressing well.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Makira Ulawa Province Superintendent Peter Sitai says, “In my briefing for the Premier of Makira Ulawa Province. Hon Julian Maka’a on 8 March 2021, I updated him on the Crime Prevention Strategy and the implementation of the Strategy in the villages throughout the Province.”

Police have assisted 50 communities in the Province with their by-laws so far and plans are in place to cover more villages during the rest of 2021.

“The Strategy has been quite effective since implementation started last year. Communities have started to sort out petty crimes themselves with their chiefs while other serious crimes like wounding, rape and murder are forwarded to police,” says PPC Sitai.

“Police will work along with village leaders to see how the Crime Prevention Strategy can be aligned to merge with other sectors including health, education, culture, churches and environment. There is also the need to identify suitable people to be responsible for those different sectors,” says PPC Sitai.

He adds, “I want to appeal to members of the community to help police officers when they come around to conduct awareness and consultation on the matter.”
