The National Community Policing team of the RSIPF conducted a half day workshop for the Solomon Island Deaf Association (SIDA) yesterday 30 July at Central Police Station in Honiara.
The half-day workshop was aimed at sharing information with people with disabilities on the Family Protection Act.
Acting Director National Community Policing, Staff Sergeant David Waura said: “The program is part of community awareness and engagement plan to visit and conduct outreach sessions for people with disabilities during the roll out of the RSIPF’s Crime Prevention Strategy.”
He said “The workshop is very important for the people with disabilities because they too must know more about the work of police and how police enforce the law.”
Public Relations Officer of the Solomon Island Deaf Association, Mrs Lovelyn Kaoga said, “the Association has set up this network with the police to assist its members acquire knowledge about our laws and understand their rights as citizens of this country.
Mrs Kwaoga added: “This is the first time members of SIDA participate in such program because for its something really frightening when talking about the police. But now they understand and actually get the information to help them.
She said some of her members are married to each other and so it helps that they understand the Family Protection Act and the role of the police as a stakeholder in the implementation of the Act.
