Police arrest suspect in relation to sea collision in east central Guadalcanal

Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at the Henderson Police Station have arrested a male person on 18 June 2021 in relation to a sea collision at Sali bay in East Central Guadalcanal.

Police Commissioner Mostyn Mangau says “The Sea Collison have occurred on the 16 June 2021 when the deceased go out on his dugout canoe for fishing outside of Sali bay.”

Commissioner says, “It will be alleged in court that the incident happened on 16 June 2021 between 11pm and 12pm where a group of men left from a school fundraising on board a 30 horsepower engine and collided with a dugout canoe and killed one male person in his 50s.”

Commissioner Managu says, “They travelled along the coast and ran on top of the deceased dugout canoe who was fishing at that time. They came back and saw the dugout canoe floating, but no one was inside the canoe. They saw the adult man was in the sea. They rescued him to Totongo clinic but died shortly after their arrival.”

Police responded to the sea incident and post mortem has been conducted. The alleged accused was escorted with two other people who accompanied the accused during the time of the incident to Henderson Police Station.

The accused formally arrested and place in police custody.

“The accused appeared before Honiara Central Magistrates’ Court on 21 June 2021 and was remanded for 14 days and will appear again on 5 July 2021 for his next mention,” Commissioner Mangau said.
