RSIPF investigates assault on NZ Naval officers

Honiara City Police officers are investigating an alleged assault on two New Zealand (NZ) Naval officers at a night club in the capital on the night of Friday 4 August 2017.

The two NZ Naval officers were in Honiara as part of the 75th Battle of Guadalcanal Anniversary Commemorations.

Honiara City Police Station have interviewed the two naval officers and several other witnesses who were at the night club that night but are still waiting to speak to several other witnesses including the suspect.

According to initial information received by Police, the incident happened when the suspect saw one of the NZ Naval officers talking and dancing with local ladies and went across and assaulted him. The second naval officer came to assist his friend but he too was assaulted. One of the naval officers sustained injuries on his head, eyes, face and legs.

Police have more information that the suspect, a local, has left on an overseas trip and are waiting to interview him on his return.

Meanwhile, Police are calling on any witness to the incident to come forward with information that will assist their investigations.
