Two people sentence for breaching by-law in Malaita

Two accused were sentenced for six months imprisonment during a court circuit at Malu’u Police Station on 9 November 2021.

Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Malaita Province, Inspectors Charles Edward Koto says the result came about when the the boys have breached the community by-laws twice by playing loud music causing nuisance at late night and was summoned by Community Policing members to pay $50.00 each but they refused it.

PPC Koto says the Community Policing members went and reported the matter to Malu’u Police Station; officers responded and arrested the three suspects on 15 July 2021.

Inspector Koto says the suspects were then charged with two counts each for the offence of causing common nuisance in the community, Contrary to Section 172 of the Penal Code. They were bailed to appear before court on their trial date.

Mr Koto says only two suspects appeared in court while the third person failed to turn up and both were sentenced to six months imprisonment during the court circuit.

The Magistrate stated during the court circuit that members of the community must comply with our community by-laws and further stated, the Courts must also exercise its powers to strengthen those community by-laws settings.
