A young man caught in a reef and die in Western Province

Officers of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) at Munda in the Western Province are investigating the death of a young man who was caught in a reef when diving.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province, Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “The sad incident happened on a reef outside of Bebea village in the Nusa Roviana lagoon on 25 March 2022.”

PPC Lenialu says, “The deceased was accompanied by his small brother and his sister to a diving site called ‘Barrier reef’ located 100 metres from Bebea Island.

Chief Superintendent Lenialu, “While diving, his brother and sister floated on the canoe and waited for about 15 minutes but their brother never resurfaced. Both suspicious and they call for diving neighbours to search for their brother and locate the dead body lying on top of a coral beneath the sea.”

Superintendent Lenialu says, “Villager call a scuba diver expert to retrieve the deceased and hand it to police for further investigation. External medical examination has been done by medical authorities.”

Mr Lenialu says, “Family and relatives of the deceased are satisfied with the death of their son and do not want any post mortem to be conducted. Investigation continues into the death incident.”

“My condolence to the family and relatives of the deceased during this time of sadness. May his soul rest with the almighty God,” says PPC Lenialau.
