The Police Response Team (PRT) under the National Response Department (NRD) of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has successfully killed one crocodile at the Wairafa Lake, Santa Ana, Makira-Ulawa Province recently.

Director National Response Department (NRD) Chief Superintendent Francis Ramoni says, “The Owa Rafa Council of Chiefs reported to Kirakira Police following frequent sightings of a crocodile at the Wairafa Lake by communities of Santa Ana Island.”

The report had stated that in the past, some community members had noticed their pigs and dogs were missing and believed to be killed by the crocodile. This has caused fear as a warning sign to the communities living and depending on their daily livelihood from the Wairafa Lake.

Early this year a 12-year-old boy was attacked by the crocodile and was later recovered after being admitted at the National Referral Hospital.

NRD Director, Chief Superintendent Francis Ramoni says, “Following this incident, the Owa Rafa Council of Chiefs has requested Kirakira Police for the destruction of the dangerous reptile. On their request, two PRT officers flew over to Kirakira and were assisted to the location and managed to kill the crocodile.”

“Result of the successful destruction of the crocodile by the two PRT officers including supporting officers of Kirakira Police, Owa Rafa Council of Chiefs and Santa Ana Church elders have expressed their appreciation to Commissioner of Police and RSIPF for the professional and endurance performed by these officers to bring the confidence and trust to RSIPF for the successful execution of the crocodile,” says Director Ramoni.

Mr Ramoni says, “I would like to appeal to people living close to crocodile areas to consider precautionary measures before planning their activities such as fishing, diving, swimming, and camping.”

Reminder to our people that if they have any sightings of crocodiles in their communities which pose threats to their lives please report to the nearest police station or contact the NRD office on phone 23829 or 23826.
