Police attend to serious assault incident in Central Province

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) officers in the Central Island Province (CIP) have arrested a man who seriously assaulted his wife at Voloa Village, Big Ngella, on Wednesday night.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) CIP Superintendent David Soakai said the wife sustained serious injuries and is currently at the Tulagi Hospital. Arrangements are being made to transfer her to Honiara for proper medical check-up.

PPC Soakai said the police have arrested the husband and placed him in custody pending the medical outcome of the wife, since the impacts of the assault are serious.

Superintendent Soakai said the police report confirmed the couple have an eight-month old baby and during that time both are believed to be under the influence of alcohol leading up to the assault.

Police confirmed the suspect has a domestic violence history having been released from Rove Correctional Centre for the same offence.

A team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) swiftly responded to this case when alerted by CIP officers based on reports from members of the Voloa community.

The starting point for the interviews would be the wife but currently she is unable to speak. Police have identified a couple of witnesses to this case.

The baby has been brought to the Tulagi Hospital for breast feeding on the mother who is in coma.

CIP and CID officers who attended to this incident were praised for their quick response despite the unpleasant weather.
