Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at Henderson Police Station in Guadalcanal Province have arrested and charged a male person for murder incident at Sumate area in West Guadalcanal on 11 January 2023.

The incident happened between 7am and 12pm on 5 January 2023.

RSIPF Commissioner Mostyn Mangau says, “The deceased and the suspect were siblings (brother and sister). The deceased was washing rice at the tank when he was shot with a bush knife straight in her right leg where the knife went through to the other side of her leg.”

Commissioner Mangau says, “The motive behind the murder incident was the mother of both the deceased and the suspect told them not to eat nuts prepared for market the next day before she went to church.”

The Police Chief says, “When the mother left, the suspect took some of the nuts and ate them. When the mother arrived back, the deceased reported what had happened to their mother and that is when the suspect got angry and shot his sister (deceased) with a bush knife. The victim (deceased) was transported for medical attention at the National Referral Hospital and died a few days after the incident.”

“The suspect was charged with one count of murder contrary to section 200 of the penal code and is currently remanded at the Correctional Service of Solomon Islands (CSSI) to appear before Honiara Central Magistrates’ Court on a later date,” Says Commissioner Mangau.
