Fallen log killed a 30-year-old male person in Makira-Ulawa Province
Officers of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) at Kirakira are investigating a fallen log that allegedly killed a 30-year-old male person at Maepua log pond on 9 June 2023.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Makira Ulawa Province Superintendent Peter Sitai says, “The male person in his 30s from Bina village, west Kwaio in Malaita province was hit by a fallen round log.”
PPC Sitai says, “The incident occurred while the deceased was in the process of unhooking a brace chain used to hold and brace logs from falling off from the truck during hauling.”
It was alleged that the deceased unlocked the brace chain. A shorter log at top of the file slipped down and hit the deceased at his belly where it forcefully threw him across under the log truck.
“The deceased was later taken to a nearby village where a woman known for traditional massage had first attended. The next day on the 10 June 2023, the deceased was rushed to Kirakira hospital where was admitted and treated before he was later pronounced dead on the 11 of June 2023,” PPC Sitai said.
Superintendent Sitai says, “The deceased’s body was already repatriated to his home village on 11 June 2023 on a chartered flight.”
The deceased was employed by a logging company operating at Maepua camp, 10 kilometres west of Kirakira town.
PPC Sitai appealed to members of the public having information about the incident to come forward and assist police with investigation and further appeal to relatives to remain calm while police are trying to surface the cause of the death.
