7 sentenced to prison, 4 remanded and 1 fined for restriction of making liquor in Temotu Province
A total of 12 male offenders were apprehended and charged for restriction of making liquor contrary to section 50(2) d of the Liquor Act throughout the Christmas and New Year police operations in Temotu Province.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Temotu Province, Superintendent James Toaki says, “7 male were sentence to 8-9 months imprisonment, and 4 others were remanded awaiting their sentence whilst 1 male was fined $2,000. The 12 male are between the ages of 19-45 years old.”
The suspects appeared before Lata Magistrate Court and at Kala Bay from 5-16 February 2024.
“Brewing, distilling and consuming of kwaso (homebrew) has become an issue faced by most communities here in Temotu. It is sad to see that some of the suspects were helped by their wife and children.”
“To community members who have taken upon themselves the responsibility to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for their families and reported the suspects, we thank you for working together with us in the successful raids,” said PPC Toaki.
