Infant baby found at Ranadi dumpsite and police condemn such action

An infant baby girl was found dead at Ranadi dumpsite on 10 August 2024, and police are currently conducting investigation into this incident and strongly condemn such action in our community.

According to the initial report, the infant was initially discovered inside a rubbish bin that had been collected from a community in the East Honiara rubbish site area.

It was reported that during the process of examining the waste deposited by the Honiara City, councils’ skipping truck, they made a harrowing discovery where they found an infant, wrapped in clothes, enclosed with a plastic bag inside an empty case.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) National Operation Juanita Matanga says, “Police have observed a recent increase in infanticide incidents, which are believed to be related to teenage pregnancy and societal changes.”

“We must support one another and work together to prevent the abandonment of infants. This report highlighted on going incidences where infants have been abandoned,” DC Matanga adds.

“The act of aborting and then discarding infants is not only a criminal offense but also an inhumane act. This inhumane act needs serious attention and action to be taken to stop such practices from happening.”

The police are calling on relevant authorities, communities, and parents to work together to assist young women who may find themselves in a difficult situation to seek help and support in order to prevent such inhumane actions.

“Let's remain vigilant and provide the support and protection our children need to thrive. Our responsibility is important in creating a safe and nurturing environment for every child,” DC Matanga emphasizes.

Parents, it is our paramount duty to look after our young children, especially our daughters, to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring. Safeguarding their well-being is essential to ensuring their safety and future.

Police are calling on the communities surrounding the area where the infant was found in a bin to provide any relevant information that could assist with the investigation.
