Magistrate Court circuit done successfully in Choiseul Province

Taro police have successfully hosted a one-week long Court circuit at Taro Police Station, with the Principal Magistrate from Honiara Central Magistrates’ Court recently.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Choiseul Province Superintendent Berry Pogesopa says, “During the week-long session, a total of 32 new cases and 14 listed cases from the previous court circuit are listed for hearing.”

PPC Pogesopa says, “The court hearing was successful with 32 defendants’ convicts and were imposed with bound over sentence, suspended sentences, fine and imprisonment. Fine worth $14,800 was collected during the court period.”

“Eight defendants are currently serving their prison term sentences ranging from four months to 10-month imprisonment for offences of assaulting police officers, house break-in and indecent assault of underage girls accordingly,” PPC adds.

“A total of seven matters were discharged and two matters were committed to the high court for further hearing.

Some of the cases were withdrawn and discharged in court as they have reached their time limitation and lack of evidence.”

PPC Pogesopa says, “The court is being successful with the support of stakeholders such as the Choiseul Provincial Government through the office of the Clerk to Assembly for allowing the Choiseul Provincial Chamber to be used as a court venue during this court circuit and looking forward to more of this collaborative in the future in serving and support our rural populace.”

Superintendent Pogesopa says, “I want to acknowledge those who support police in any way that make this court circuit successful. Let us work together to address law and order issues in Choiseul Province.”
