Police and stakeholders visit to communities during Children International Day
The Gizo community policing team, along with Social Welfare and Save the Children staff, have visited two communities and conducted awareness talks on separate days in recognition of Children's International Day.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province, Superintendent Wilken Miriki, said the first visit was made to Kinamara community at Kohingo Island.
PPC Miriki said the second visit to Lambulambu school and its surrounding schools, where they came together to celebrate International Children's Day with the theme ‘Investing in our children means investing in our future.'
Superintendent Miriki said the awareness talks were based on the Family Protection Act, domestic violence, and the penalties an individual will face if he/she is found guilty of committing them.
Mr. Miriki said the team also talked about the behaviour and characteristics of a sexual predator, sexual offenses and their charges, and children’s rights.
“Parents who were present during the awareness talks were reminded of the importance of the role they have in nourishing our future leaders,” said PPC Miriki.
Miriki adds: Our vulnerable children are in need of our constant observation, plus it is also our biblical responsibilities.
“I appeal to parents, church leaders, community elders, and individuals to always look out for our children to teach and mould them to be responsible and be good citizens. After all, they are our future,” said PPC Miriki.
