Kirakira police witness launching of by-law at Kakaoraana community
Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) at the Kirakira Police Station have witnessed the launching of the Kakaoraana community (Ward 9) by-law in Central Bauro, Makira Ulawa Province, on November 20, 2024.
This event was successfully implemented through the continuous effort and support from the Crime Prevention Unit at Kirakira Police Station and the positive response from the community.
The launch came after a comprehensive conflict resolution training conducted for all leaders on November 19, 2024, in preparations for the implementation of the by-law.
Makira Provincial Government representative and MPA for (ward 9) Hon. Joseph Haruharu was the guest of honour during the event. MPA Joseph Haruharu, in his speech, thanked the community leaders for the initiative in supporting the police and the provincial government to have their by-laws.
Hon. Joseph Haruharu said that he will continue to assist them in whatever needs for good governance in the community.
Team Leader Crime Prevention Unit Makira-Ulawa Province, Sergeant (Sgt) Audrey Suhata, says, “By-laws are not a new concept or approach for the people of the Solomon Islands. Our forefathers have had them in place as measures to maintain law and order in our community’s way before the present.”
“The launching of the community by-law marks a milestone for the Kakaoraana community. I want to acknowledge the ward 9 House of Chiefs, elders, committee members, all members of the community, business houses, and stakeholders for the great work and great support you rendered into making it a reality,” Sgt. Suhata said.
Mr. Suhata reminds the communities that once communities are organised and live up to the by-laws, more developments will come in the near future. He urged the community to take ownership of their community and to work together, respect, and help each other for a peaceful community.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Makira/Ulawa province, Superintendent Peter Sitai, said it is good that people begin to understand their roles and responsibilities in assisting the policing work carried out by the police.
“I encourage all community leaders to further communicate the importance of the by-laws down to the youths and children, as they are the new generations that need to fully understand the by-laws,” said PPC Sitai.
