Police conduct Crime Prevention Awareness in Makira-Ulawa Province
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Community Policing Team at Kirakira Police Station conducted awareness talks on Crime Prevention Strategy at Waita and Mwaniwaro communities in West and Central Makira, Makira-Ulawa Province, recently.
Under the crime prevention strategy initiative, awareness talks covering topics like Kwaso, domestic violence, marijuana and alcohol abuse were covered in presentations.
Makira’s Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Superintendent Peter Sitai, said Kirakira police and communities agreed to have these talks.
“Community leaders of the two communities and Kirakira Police agreed on an urgent awareness talk,” Superintendent Sitai said.
He said they also agree to set up community by-laws to proactively mitigate the increasing rate of the five drivers of crime including alcohol and drugs, family violence, issues affecting youths, resources & environment and emerging issues.
PPC Sitai said the program is part of the ongoing Crime Prevention Strategy that has been rolled out in the province aimed at providing legal solutions to community leaders battling issues that are on the rise in their communities.
Team leader of the Makira Community Policing, Sergeant Audrey Suhata said the concept of crime prevention strategy needs collaborative efforts by all sectors in our community settings and stakeholders to proactively work together to prevent and lessen crime occurrence.
“This is the first stage of the initiative, which is the awareness talk. The next task is to put together the by-laws, followed by Scanning Analysis Response and Assessment (SARA) training and the launching stage.
This initiative demands us to work together to address issues affecting our community and take good ownership of our community if we want peace, unity and harmony to prevail in our communities,” Sergeant Suhata said.
Community leaders and members in the province who wish to have by-laws established in their communities are invited to visit the Kirakira Community Policing team for more information.
