Kirakira Police Visits Ulawa Island as continuous effort in rolling out the CPS in the province
The Community Policing Unit (CPU) of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) in the Kirakira police station recently visited Ulawa Island from 7 to 11 July 2025.
Team Leader (TL), CPU, Makira-Ulawa Province, Sergeant (Sgt) Audrey Suhata, said the visit was purposely to strengthen communities and to inform them on the current status of the Crime Prevention Strategy (CPS) in the province and the standardization idea of the custom by-laws.
“According to the CPU’s five-year strategic plan, we are now at the second phase of the CPS, which is the standardization of the bylaws according to wards,” said Sgt. Suhata.
TL Suhata said the visitation aims to seek consensus on the standardization of custom laws for the whole of the island, which will cover wards 1, 2, and 3.
“And also, to identify the existing gaps within the community governance structures and how both the police, communities, and stakeholders can work together to address them,” Officer Suhata said.
Mr. Suhata reiterated the
importance of continuous collaboration with communities and stakeholders as a powerful tool to identify any existing gaps and work on filling them. CPU will conduct training for community leaders and the Ulawa House of Chiefs once the draft bylaw is completed and agreed upon.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) of Makira-Ulawa Province conveyed appreciation to Ulawa communities and community leaders for their support towards the team and CPU in Makira-Ulawa Province for the initiative in sustaining CPS in every ward in Makira-Ulawa Province.
