PSUs begins a three-week intensive training on less lethal arms capabilities

AC NO Mr Francis Ramoni gave his official remarks during the opening programme

Police Support Units (PSUs) of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) from Honiara City, Guadalcanal Police and Close Personal Protection officers have begun a three-week intensive training program on less lethal capabilities in Honiara.

The three-week training began with an official opening programme at Rove police headquarters on 17 November 2025 and will be closed on 5 December 2025.

The purpose of this training is to enhance PSU's less lethal capability—an essential component of modern policing to support frontline policing to deal with tense situations.

Assistant Commissioner (AC) National Operations, Mr Francis Ramoni, said, 'As we continue to support frontline officers and safeguard our communities, it is vital that our officers are well-trained, disciplined, and confident in the safe and effective use of less lethal tools and tactics.'

AC Ramoni said a total of 22 officers were initially selected for this training, all of whom underwent medical checks prior to the 24-hour selection phase. Out of the 22, five officers withdrew during the process, leaving 17 officers who accepted the challenge and successfully completed the 24-hour intensive assessment.

Mr Ramoni said following their performance and resilience during the assessment, all 17 officers have been recommended to commence this training focusing on less lethal capability.

“This training will qualify the participants as less lethal operators. Police are introducing two key components of our less lethal arsenal: the Remington 870P and Mossberg shotguns and the 40mm Pin Arm Gas Launcher.”

“These tools are designed to enhance police ability to respond effectively, especially during riot situations, hostage incidents, and high-risk warrant operations,” said AC NO Mr Ramoni.

He emphasises that discipline is the priority and the key throughout this training. The skills operators will learn carry significant responsibility, and discipline—both on and off the range—will determine your success.
