Police rescue six banana boats recently in CIP

Tulagi and Yandina police have rescued six banana boats recently in just a one-week period in Central Province after receiving six distress calls from boat operators.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Central Province, Superintendent David Soakai, said of the six boats, four boats were due to fuel shortages and two other boats had engine failures.

PPC Saokai said as the festive season coincides with worsening weather conditions, it is strongly advisable for the small banana boat operators to take extra precautions before travel.

Superintendent Soakai said these incidents are preventable and highlight the need for better preparation. Your safety begins with your preparation.

Let’s prevent avoidable emergencies and ensure a safe festive season.

“Tulagi and Yandina police stations currently do not have the capability to respond to maritime emergencies because our Stabicraft has been recalled for major repairs until it is replaced with a new boat,” said Mr. Soakai.

Police in Central Province urge boat owners and operators to:
• Inspect boat and engine thoroughly before travel
• Carry sufficient fuel for the journey
• Avoid travelling in poor weather conditions.
• Notify someone of your travel plans and expected return
