Police appeal for mutual respect and noise control in communities Honiara

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) is appealing to all communities in and around Honiara to respect one another and maintain peace within their neighbourhoods on a daily basis.

It has come to the attention of police that there has been an increase in cases where community members, mostly during weekends, fail to respect one another by causing unnecessary noise late into the night and morning.

These disturbances commonly involve shouting and the playing of loud music through boom boxes (portable speakers).

Police are concerned that such behaviour negatively affects households, especially families with little children. Children are sensitive to loud noises, which can cause fear, distress, and disruption to their sleep and overall well-being.

Reports state that these disturbances are often linked to alcohol consumption, particularly among youths within the communities.

Community elders and leaders have expressed concern that they are no longer able to effectively control or manage these situations.

Police would like to remind the public that

under the law, playing loud music or making unnecessary noise is considered a common nuisance and is illegal. Individuals found breaching this law may be arrested and charged accordingly.

The RSIPF urges all community members to live responsibly, respect the law, and consider the safety and wellbeing of others to avoid being dealt with.

Community leaders and elders are encouraged to work together to promote peace within their communities. If disturbances continue or cannot be controlled, communities are advised to report the matter or contact their nearest police station for assistance.

Police remain committed to working with communities to maintain peace, safety, and harmony for everyone.
