Police appeal for calm and business as usual for the election of prime minister

The Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) is appealing to the general public for calm and business as usual during the election of the new prime minister on 15 May 2026.

The appeal came after three candidates had been nominated for the prime ministership position on Friday this week.

Your police-RSIPF will be conducting its operation to provide high visibility in the capital, Honiara, to ensure business continues as usual for both the government and the private sector. The operation actually started a few weeks ago, with officers doing normal police patrols and foot beat patrols to give reassurance to our people that business should continue as usual.

The National Crime Prevention Department (NCPD) has been doing engagement with crime prevention committees, local community leaders, church leaders, youth leaders, and women leaders in our communities in and around town.

RSIPF Commissioner Mr. Ian Vaevaso said now you expect to see police visiting communities not because of the current political situation but as normal community engagement to share the spirit of working together for the safety of our people.

“Your police—RSIPF—are ready to deal with any given situation when things go out of hand. Therefore, I am appealing to the good people of this country to stay calm and respect the democratic process. We already give our Members of Parliament (MPs) our votes during the election, so it is our leaders who make decisions to represent us on the political level,” said Commissioner Vaevaso.

The police boss appeals to the members of the public to stay calm while the process takes its course and to allow MPs to do their work in accordance with political processes to elect our new prime minister. Police will ensure public safety in the process; the RSIPF is closely monitoring the current political situation.

He is emphasizing the importance of maintaining law and order and urging citizens to continue with business as usual. As the situation unfolds, the RSIPF will continue to provide updates to keep the public informed and reassured.

The police chief told members of the public to refrain from doing anything that may disrupt this democratic process of electing our new leader and to refrain from taking advantage of any situation.

It is crucial for our good citizens to remain vigilant and united during such times.

The RSIPF is committed to a peaceful environment and ensuring that our leaders exercise their mandates and duties through a democratic process to elect our new prime minister.
