Janus and Australia boost capability to fight financial crime

A three officer Taskforce Janus delegation comprising of both Ministry of Finance and Treasury Internal Audit Investigators and Royal Solomon Island Police took part in a professional development visit to Australia from 18-22 May 2026.

Through knowledge exchange with international counterparts and exposure to contemporary investigative and judicial practices, the visit enhanced the officers’ capacity to support Taskforce Janus to address fraud and corruption within and against government.

The visit was supported by Australia as part of ongoing efforts to partner with Solomon Islands to strengthen governance, enhance public sector capability and build resilience against financial crime and corruption risks.

The program included participation in the ACAMS Assembly Australasia Conference, a leading regional forum for fighting money laundering and financial crime.

Through the conference, Janus officers engaged with regional and international practitioners from government, regulatory agencies, law enforcement and the private sector to discuss emerging trends, risks, and collaborative approaches to combating financial crime.

A Janus spokesperson said the engagement reinforced the importance of regional cooperation and information sharing in responding to increasingly sophisticated financial crime risks.

“The conference highlighted that financial crime is a global challenge requiring coordinated action across national and international agencies,” said a Janus spokesperson. “Strong partnerships, information sharing, and a collective commitment to governance are critical to protecting our financial systems.”

The delegation also observed judicial processes related to complex financial crime matters in Australia, providing broader exposure to the role of evidence management, investigative coordination, and legal process in supporting effective prosecution outcomes.

“Seeing how complex financial evidence is presented and tested in court was invaluable,” the spokesperson said. “It reinforced the need for high-quality brief preparation, strong evidence management, and effective use of expert witnesses.”

The visit also enabled Taskforce Janus to identify opportunities for continued capability development and institutional strengthening relevant to the Solomon Islands context.

Taskforce Janus remains committed to working collaboratively with national, regional, and international partners to strengthen institutional capability, support integrity within the public system, and contribute to efforts that protect the integrity of Solomon Islands’ financial and governance systems.
