Police arrest and charge two suspects in Western Province

Police in Gizo have arrested and charged two suspects following a recent police patrol operation to the Western Border last week.

The first suspect was apprehended on Mono Island in the Shortland Islands in relation to an alleged rape incident. A 51-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol dragged a 53-year-old woman into the bush and raped him on 29 July 2026.

The suspect has been charged and is currently remanded at the Gizo Correctional Service while awaiting his court date.

The second suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder following an incident at Nuhu Village on 31 July 2026.

According to police report, the victim was having a few drinks with friends when the suspect approached him and shone a torchlight directly into his face.

The victim was unable to see clearly and did not expect that he was in danger. The suspect then moved closer while holding a rock and struck the victim in the face, causing serious injuries.

The victim was initially referred to Gizo Hospital before being transferred to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara for further medical treatment and assessment. The second suspect is also currently remanded at the Gizo Correctional Service awaiting his court proceedings.

Communities in the Shortland Islands expressed support for a stronger police presence in the area. Community members said the arrest of the two suspects has helped restore confidence and reassurance among communities.
