Man remanded for attacking an Australian national with a bush knife in Honiara

An application to court has been granted to police to remand a male suspect in his 30s for attacking an Australian national with a bush knife.

The attack incident has occurred around 12 o’clock on 11 September 2026, just about 50 metres away from the entrance of the Australian High Commission office in Honiara.

Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Honiara City, Superintendent Leslie Kili said it was alleged that the suspect attacked the victim on his head and back and sustained injuries.

PPC Kili said the victim was medically examined by the Australian High Commission Medical Clinic.

Superintendent Kili said police responded to the incident, arrested the suspect and dealt with. The suspect has been charged with attempted murder contrary to Section 215 (a) of the Penal Code.

Mr Kili said it was alleged that the suspect is a mentally ill person who is roaming around the streets of Honiara.

“

Police have been facing the issue of dealing with mentally ill people for quite a long time now, which is very challenging, but it is something we work collaboratively to mitigate it with other relevant stakeholders,” said PPC Kili.

He appeals to everyone to take precautionary measures when encountering such incidents while we work on challenges associated with mentally ill people with other stakeholders.
Police investigation remains ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and gather all relevant evidence.
