Man charged by police for accident in Gizo over New Year festivity

A 34 year-old man is facing two counts for reckless and dangerous driving; and driving under the influence of alcohol regarding an alleged vehicle accident on 01 January 2018 along Gizo Road, in front of Nelos Vilas Rest House KHZ area, in the Western Province .

It is alleged the man was driving a vehicle at very high speed heading northerly direction from top hill area headed to Gizo township area with two passengers on board the vehicle when the vehicle over-turned.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western, Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “The driver was alleged to be affected by alcohol when the accident occurs.”

“There were two other men onboard the vehicle together with the driver and they were fortunate to survive,” adds PPC Lenialu.

The driver and the two other men have been taken care by Gizo hospital and alleged to receive minor injuries.

The matter was reported to police in Gizo and police attended the scene.

The man was interviewed, charged for two counts for reckless and dangerous driving; and driving under the influence of alcohol and was released on bail to appear before Gizo Magistrate on the 30January 2018.

“Police will continue to remind public, don’t drink alcohol if you are driving, your safety and the safety of others is paramount,” says PPC Lenialu.
