RSIPF meets with Honiara Youth Council to discuss crime prevention

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), the Honiara Youth Council supported by the Solomon Islands Police Support Program from New Zealand (SIPDP) and the Solomon Islands Police Development Program (SIPDP) from Australia have conducted a one-day workshop at the Rove Police Headquarters on 14 March 2018 to discuss the factors driving young people to commit crime in the local communities.

“Young people, the future and destiny of this country is in your hands. We all can work together to prevent crime happening in this country. RSIPF will work in partnership with you, and we need you as young people to fight against crime in our society. Thank you SIPSP for the great initiative,” says the Director RSIPF Community Policing, Department, Superintendent Solomon Sisimia.

He adds: “The RSIPF Crime Prevention Strategy 2016-2018, has four main drivers of crime and one of them is youth. The other three drivers are alcohol and drugs, family and environment and resources. With this workshop I believe that you will represent youth throughout the country in discussing what makes youth to resort to criminal activities.”

President of Honiara Youth Council, Henry Olikwailafa says, “I thank you RSIPF, SIPSP, SIPDP and Honiara City Council for believing in the youth. We know that today we are living in uncertain and unsettling times, and complex challenges confront us every day. But the RSIPF Crime Prevention Strategy 2016 – 2018 gives us hope as its key component is engagement with communities and stakeholders to prevent crime.”

Deputy Leader of SIPSP, George Fa’alogo says, “SIPSP is here to support the RSIPF to build a vision for the youth of Honiara and the rest of the country. This is a program designed by Solomon Islander young people for the hopes and aspirations of young people in the country. The youth in this country have a lot to contribute towards the successful implementation of the Crime Prevention Strategy and reduce crime in Solomon Islands.”

The consultation with youth on what is driving them to commit crime will be done in Honiara, Guadalcanal and will roll out to the provinces with the support of the RSIPF and SIPSP and SIPDP.
