Supervising Police Commissioner, Juanita Matanga urges people of Solomon Islands to watch the FIFA World Cup currently underway in Russia with a spirit of sportsmanship.
The comment comes after it was alleged that the recent death of a 31-year-old man in Central Honiara was in connection with arguments over the FIFA World Cup.
“Whilst we are watching this particular FIFA World Cup, it’s good that we watch the games in the spirit of sportsmanship,” says Supervising Police Commissioner, Juanita Matanga.
She adds: “It is an opportunity for our young people to watch these kinds of games but do not take things personally. Let me remind you all not to take the law into your own hands. These games are only games and it’s not something to take seriously. We will only create problems if we take things personally.”
Ms Matanga says, “I urge all Solomon Islanders across the country and particularly in Honiara to watch the World Cup in the right way. Sit down with your families and friends and support your teams in the spirit of sportsmanship.”
“It will be a sad thing to see young people resorting to violence and taking the law into their own hands on this matter,” says Commissioner Matanga.
