Police investigate sudden death of 30-year-old male inmate at Gizo Correctional Centre

Police at Gizo in Western Province is investigating the sudden death of a 30-year-old male inmate at the Correctional Services Solomon Islands (CSSI) Centre at Malakerava on 24 July 2018.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “It is alleged that the deceased complained of a chest pain but shortly after he collapsed and became unconscious.”

PPC Lenialu says, “CSSI officers rushed the deceased to the Gizo Hospital but not long after he arrived at the Hospital he was pronounced dead by Medical authorities at the Hospital this morning 24 July 2018.”

“Currently my officers are investigating the death of the inmate and I appeal to relatives of the deceased to refrain from taking the law in to their own hands and allow police to investigate this sudden death incident,” says Chief Superintendent Lenialu.

Mr Lenialu says, “We are working close with the family of the deceased to conduct a post mortem to confirm the cause of death.”

The deceased was serving a three-year prison term after being convicted of an armed robbery incident at Kariki, in the Shortland Islands.
