RSIPF conduct community awareness in Western

Police at Gizo in the Western Province have conducted community awareness talks to about 250 people at the Sambora and Varesi villages, on Vella La Vella from 24 to 25 July 2018.

During the two days of talks, the Community Policing Team from Gizo Police Station presented topics including:
• What is law, three sources of law which is divine law, customary law and constitution law;
• Marijuana and its side effects and its offence; and
• Kwaso-homebrew, its effects and its offence

Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Western Province, Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “Both the chiefs and chairmen of Sambora and Varesi communities were happy and acknowledged the team for the awareness. They assured the Community Policing Team that they will work closely with the local crime prevention committee to prevent any crime in their villages.”

Chief Superintendent Lenialu explains, “During the awareness talks people were given the opportunity to ask questions on various topics including the power to arrest by a private person under the Criminal Procedure Code Section 21, Sub-section 1.”

PPC Lenialu says, “The Community Policing Team from Gizo was privileged to meet with a youth from one of the communities who told them about the challenges he faced while involved in the use of illegal substances including kwaso.”

“The Chief of Varesi Village assured the Community Policing Team that he will work closely with the local Crime Prevention Committee (CPC) and Police. The Chief assured the Team that he will assist to arrest anyone who allegedly commits a crime in the community and hand them over to the Police,” says PPC Lenialu.
