Burglars sentenced to more than 2 years in jail

Two youth in their 20’s have been sentenced to serve a jail term of two years and three months by the Honiara Central Magistrates Court after being found guilty on a charge of burglary (stealing) contrary to Section 299, Subsection A of the Penal Code on 26 July 2018.

The incident occurred on the night of 20 July 2018 at the City Motel, in Central Honiara whilst the complainant who was a guest at the Motel was asleep in his room.

“Whilst the complainant was asleep the defendants went up to his room and opened the door. One of them went into the room whilst the other one kept a look out,” says Provincial Police Commander Honiara City, Chief Superintendent Alfred Uiga.

He adds: “They took the complainant’s bag containing his valuable properties including a laptop, mobile phones, and an IPad plus other valuable properties before escaping.”

PPC Uiga says, “The complainant woke up and found that his bag was missing. With the help of witnesses they identified the suspects and took them to the place of incident. The matter was reported to police after which they were arrested and placed in police custody.”

“My investigators from Central Police station took them to court on 22 July 2018 and applied for remand and they were remanded in the Correctional Services Solomon Islands (CSSI) Centre at Rove until they were sentenced on 26 July 2018 after pleading guilty to the charge,” says PPC Uiga.

He adds: “Police officers have recovered the stolen properties. I want to thank members of the community for their assistance in capturing these
offenders and my officers for the job well done.”

PPC Uiga says, “This is a very good example of how the community and police can work together to fight crime in our communities. Let us continue to keep up the good work and continue to work together for a safer community.”
