Second suspect in relation to kwaso raid fined $12,000

The Central Magistrates Court in Honiara has fined a second male suspect in the recent kwaso raid at the Namoruka settlement, West Honiara, $12,000.00 yesterday (24 August 2018) in after being found guilty of brewing the illegal substance.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Honiara City, Chief Superintendent Mr Alfred Uiga says, “The defendant was arrested and charged for the offences of restriction on making liquor contrary to Section 50 (2) (b) and Section 50 (2) (c) of the Liquor Act.”

PPC Uiga adds: “The man was taken to the Central Magistrates Court in Honiara where he pleaded guilty to the charge. He was ordered to pay a fine of $12,000.00 by 19 October 2018 and if he fails to pay the fine, he will go to prison for one year six months.”

Chief Superintendent Uiga explains, “There are other means where we can generate income for our families rather than resorting to these kinds of illegal activities. Nowadays we are facing issues of anti-social behaviour in our communities such as common nuisance, drunk and disorderly assaults, and many more. They are all alcohol related issues.”

He adds, “It is time we stand together and fight against kwaso in our communities. Report to police anyone in your community who you know to be cooking kwaso so that they can be taken before the Court. Let us all work together to curb this kind of illegal activities.”

The first suspect in the same kwaso raid at Namoruka was fined $19,000.00 earlier this week.
