“Lead by example” – so goes the saying but for the Commissioner of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), Matthew Varley this has become reality as he takes the lead in personally staying healthy and well. Hopefully, all, if not at least a majority of his officers, will follow suit.
“I want to show my officers, that if I can do it, sure they can also do the same in keeping a healthy livelihood as we continue to serve the people of this nation Solomon Islands,” says Commissioner Varley as he gets down into getting his weight, blood pressure, blood sugar level and his eye-sight measured at the RSIPF Health and Wellness Centre at the Rove Police Headquarters in Honiara this morning (3 September 2018)
Commissioner Varley will undergo an eight-week fitness program starting this week and encourages members of his Executive and all other ranks and file to do the same.
“Policing is a very challenging job both mentally and physically, so officers need to maintain a keep fit program that will assist them perform at their maximum. I want to show my officers, I too need to be fit both physically and mentally if I am going to perform my duties. I also expect them to do likewise,” Commissioner Varley explains.
As part of the eight week program, Commissioner Varley’s performance will be measured as he is taken through a daily fitness and diet program
He adds: “I want to believe that I am starting what I could call a health and wellness movement within the RSIPF. I urge all officers within the Force to seriously consider joining this movement. Let us take the lead in ensuring Solomon Islands is a healthy and fit society.”
Commissioner Varley encourages all RSIPF officers serving in Honiara to utilise the new Health and Wellness Centre recently opened at the Rove Police Headquarters in Honiara. Staff at the Centre is also expected to extend their services to the provincial police stations starting with Guadalcanal Province.
